Charleston ENT’s Dr. Matthew Scarlett and his "medical assistant" five year-old daughter Ainsley, smiled their way through a rainy and blustery December Saturday in North Charleston as they greeted and he examined many of the 1600 needy people who braved the cold to receive food, care and encouragement from Without Walls Ministry and Convoy of Hope.

Charleston, SC—Erik Roger Swanson, M.D., has joined the physicians and staff of Charleston Ear, Nose and Throat Associates, according to Michael Grubb, Executive Director of the seven-office practice, which serves patients throughout the Lowcountry and is the largest independent otolaryngology group in South Carolina.

Summer in the Lowcountry often equals fun in the water.

Unfortunately, fun in the water can bring with it problems, one of the most common of which is swimmer's ear.

Last week, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimated that swimmer's ear causes about 2.4 million trips to doctors and hospitals each year at an annual cost of $500 million, or roughly $200 per visit.

Swimmer's ear, also called acute otitis externa, is an itchy, painful infection of the outer ear canal that can affect swimmers of all ages.
